The Briefcase "Briefs" Job Search Newsletter - Issue #10

In this issue: Different is better than better, importance of stories in an interview, how to develop a personal brand, how to approach a stranger for job search help, how to get started on LinkedIn... and more!

Dear readers,

How are you hanging in there? It's been a long month over here.

I know I don't need to tell you this, but 30+ million people will enter the U.S. job market this quarter (and are doing it from their home). Online applications just won’t make the cut anymore.

I have talked to dozens of job seekers over the last week and found some exceptional people doing things just a bit differently with the hope of standing out. The latest article on my blog highlights the story of 5 exceptional job seekers who are embracing the "different is better than better" mentality when job searching. If you are interested in learning practical ways that you can stand out in your search, it's a must read.

As always, this issue is packed with some of my favorite job search articles this month. If you like receiving this newsletter, please consider sharing this link on social media or with a friend.

Reach out and say hello this week. Tell me how you are dealing with these new changes. I’d love to hear from you.

As always, I’m rooting for you,

Sarah

Ps. Did you hear that I launched a YouTube channel? I'll be releasing weekly job search videos (and am currently giving away a FREE LinkedIn guide on my channel). Please check it out and subscribe.

Interview and Networking Advice

Preparing engaging STAR stories during the interview can help you land the job. This article shows you how to prepare stories.

I got the opportunity to interview branding and reputation expert, Dave Gordon on his new book TIP and how to develop a personal brand. Readers have already said that the article unpacked content that they've never considered before.

If you are using the old 45-second elevator pitch to introduce yourself, you need to switch to a micro-pitch. Hannah Morgan, one of my favorite career experts, shares her best advice for crafting a targeted elevator pitch.

Networking during the coronavirus pandemic requires strategic tact and persistence. The article tackles *What work to do before even reaching out? * How to frame the conversation?* How to get help in the process? * How to manage the anxious feelings that come up?
